The Art Treasures of San Michele Arcangelo Church

The cycle of paintings consists of the following subjects:

  • The Annunciation (at the end of the apse)
  • The Birth of Christ; The Apparition of Saint Michael the Archangel on Monte Gargano; Saint Michael Killing the Dragon; The Apparition of Saint Michael in Castel Sant'Angelo at Rome (the left-hand wall of the apse)
  • The Epiphany; The Allegory of the Hereafter (right-hand wall of the apse)
  • The Four Evangelists (on the face of the apse)
  • Portraits of six saints (below the archway to the entrance of the apse)

The church also holds other precious works amongst which are additional frescoes which are, however, in a poor state of preservation.

On the right-hand wall there is a large-scale figure of Saint Christopher with the infant Christ, dating from the fourteenth century. Both faces were damaged as a result of restoration in 1933.

Additional works by Sienese artists include:

  • A fine Coronation of the Virgin with Angels and Saints Ansano and Peter, from the start of the fifteenth century.
  • The great altarpiece is by the Sienese painter Guidozzo Cocciarelli, a collaborator of Matteo di Giovanni. It shows the Madonna enthroned, with Christ and Saints John the Baptist, Michael, William and Antony, Abbot.

The church also contains a painted wooden Crucifix. This has been recently restored and is much venerated by the community. It is probably the work of a sculptor from the fifteenth century. A romantic legend is associated with the crucifix, of which there are two versions.
