Civitella Marittima is located on a hilltop that overlooks the Maremma with a view of Monte Amiata in the distance.
While the origins of the town are found in the mists of time, in a later era it became one of the most ancient feudal settlements of the Ardengheschi Counts. In 1202, after various uprisings and rebellions, the Counts agreed to pay the powerful Republic of Siena a "fodro" (26 denari) for each family within its territory.
By 1254, in light of their submission to Siena, the Counts had allowed the progressive deterioration of their authority with the eventual sale, in 1371, of what remained.
Today it is part of the Province of Grosseto and the seat of the Borough's administration.
